The Articles of Confederation and the Constitution

Blog #2- Due Monday, March 18th.

The Articles of Confederation was the first form of government created by the young United States after the Revolutionary War. As you know, the Articles of Confederation did not work out and the Constitution eventually took its place.

Why do you think the Articles of Confederation did not last as the government for the United States?
Did Articles of Confederation do anything good?
What needed to be changed to make the country stronger?
What do you think would have happened if the United States kept the Articles of Confederation?
What changes did the "founding fathers" make in the new Constitution to address the problems in the Articles of Confederation?

  1. I think the Articles of Confederation did not last as the government for the United States because the United States had to many laws and things for them to handle. I also think the Articles of Confederation did not last as the government for the United States becuse the United States ended up getting a government.

I agree when you say the government had too many laws because I believe that this made it too weak.

  5. i think the articles of confederation didn't last long as the government for the united states because we just got out of war and wanted more and more freedom if we lost that freedom we threatened to rebel. the federal government should have had more power over the state governments and the law about 9 states agreeing on a law should have been thrown out asap. if we had kept the articles of confederation our country would be very weak if we hadn't fallen yet. some changes made to our government were the way that we spread out our power in the government. we had 1 part of the government and changed it to 3. the legislative, judicial and executive. the legislative branch made the laws the judicial branch enforced the laws and executive branch made sure the laws were carried out fairly. we did nothing with slavery and we voted on making 2 houses in the legislative branch, 1 being based on population and the other by equal representatives. the articles of confederation were weak and it saved our country from falling when we changed them.

I agree with you highly. After getting out of the war we wanted too much power, and because of this i was part of the downfall of the Articles of Confederation. With 3 new branches of government equal power was to be given and decisions to be agreed upon. You are right if the Articles were kept we would be very weak if we hadnt already fallen. When 9 staes out of 12 have to agree about something it probably wouldnt be easy to come to a solution, so your right and i agree that, that rule should be the first to go.

  6. i think the aticles of conferderation didnt last because they were weak. the federal government had no power so if a riot started they couldnt stop it. the articles of confederation did do some good though, it set aside land for schools. what needed to change was the federal government had to have more power so the states cant rebell. also they needed to help the slaves a little bit. i think that we wouldve fallen if we kept it because it was so weak. changes that the founding fathers made were they made a new government, changed slave rules, and they gave the people new rights.

  11. I think The Articles Of Confederation didnt last very long for a few reasons. One reason is that we (12 states) didnt agree with each other some people wanted salves and other didnt and more things like the government (about how to run it).The states didnt want to give the government to much power so we came up with the idea of 3 branches of government, legislative, judical, and executive. The Articles Of Confederation did do some good things though like set/save land for schools. The Articles Of Conderation had a few good things with it but mostly not as many good things.

I think the Articles of Confederation didnt last as our government because we wanted to rule ourselves and we didnt really have the experience too. We also didnt want to rule like the British so, we changed everything we were used to. The Articles of Confederation did do some good things although they didnt last. For example, one thing they good was that they put land aside for building schools. There were many things that needed to be changed in the Articles of Confederation. For example, one thing that needed to change was that the federal government had to have more power.Another thing that had to change was the amount of states needed to make a vote for a decision. If the Articles of Confederation were not changed I think that the country would have fallen and we wouldnt be here or live like we do today. One important thing discussed in the constitution was that there would be 3 branches of governtment. the legeslative, exectutive, and judicial branches. They also gave women rights. There are mant other reasons to why I think the Articles of Confederation needed to be changed but I think these are the most important.

I think the articles of confederation did not last long for several reasons. One they gave the states to much power so they felt they were in control of the government. Some basicrights should be casted apun the citizens, freedom of speech so they can say and create ffeelings or say as theyy want, the right. To own land is a necessity and that incldes women. Slaves should not be allowed to too the decloration of inddependance saying all men r equal. Weneedd to stand by the rights we hab alreadyset instone.

  17. the articles of confederation seemed like a good idea when it first started. however, as time progressed, the article of confederation gave the states more power they need. they didnt want to end up in a war so they gave the states more power then the federal goverment. but when shays rebelion took place, the federal goverment couldnt help which made them realise they had to mkake some changes.

A new government was created after the Articles of Confederation was ended. The Articles of Confederation did not last as long as the government because Americs was weak. Shay's Rebellion showed just how weak we were. The laws were not strict enough and people could do any vandalising they wanted to. Nothing good came out of the Articles of Confederation. The states had more power than the Federal Government. That meant that if any state needed help or controling no one clould really do anything about it. The laws were also weak so people could do as they please. Many things needed to be changed in order for America to grow strong. Our government needed to be changed from one branch to 3 branches. They were called the Judical, Executive, and Legislative Branches. We also had the Legislatove Branch have 2 houses. One was for the representatives of each state, and the other was for representation to be based on population. If the Articles of Confederation were kept I think America would not be where it is today, if it didn't fall yet. Slavery would most likely still be standing and women wouldn't be allowed to go to school. We wouldn't be as advanced either because only men would be working and having jobs, not all ideas would be shared. Some things the our Founding Fathers put in the Constitution was armed forces (army) and women rights. Women didn't have to be put down under such harsh ruling anymore and the army would be trained more, and have more weapons. The Articles of Confederation were not good towards the country and we should be glad they were dropped, and a new government began.

  21. i think that the articles of confederation didnt last for our new country america for many reasons. one reason i think this is because if any states' people would rebel there would be no central government to disolve the problem. also the articles of confederation wouldnt last in ur new country of america because it would make it hard to fight a war with any attackers who want our land because we dont have a combined militaries.

  22. I think the articles of confederation didn't last for many resons.one is that they didn't have enough power. they should of been able to make laws more easily. they also should of ben-en able to tax the states. I think if the us kept the articles of confederation that the country would have fallen. but luckily they changed the articles of confederation and made a new government. they added 3 branches of government and gave the government more power. that's not all the things they did and all they will do. when they made the constitution they made it amendable so that if something where to happen or they want to change or add things they could. those are my thoughts on the articles of confederation.

i think the articles of confederation did not last long because each state had different needs and wants this lead to lots of arguments in government and in other things to but, i do think the articles of confederation did things good like let people settle west of the mountains and it let states set up schools that is the only thing the articles did right . the things that needed changes was the government and how we thought things needed to be done like what some things states thought where fair others thought where unfair and thats why the great compromise was make to create peace and happy states not states that want to fight each other.if the articles of confederation was still in effect we might be under other RULE of another government. the changes the founding faters made wher equal rights and other major things we have today

  27. it didn't provide a strong central government. the states acted completely independent of each other. acting for their best interest and not that of the states as a whole.
The Articles of Confederation were the first governmental document of the Unites States of America, but failed to establish a strong government. It gave the individual state governments more power than the federal government, making the federal government rely on the states for tax money, laws, and other such things. The Articles of Confederation were written to provide a form of government for the newly-united 13 colonies. They did not work because they gave the federal government little power and gave the states too much power. The states acted as separate nations, yet still expected the federal government to handle everything. For example: the federal government was expected to pay the army, but had no means to do so

    ReplyDelete
  28. if america still had the articles of confederation the county would fall or be very weak. all of the stats would hav different laws and money (it would be very difficult to move to a diff state).the states would disagree and maybe even get into a war with each other. the constitution makes all the states united into a central gov. in order to get a federal law 9 of the 13 states need to agree on it. it lets everyone get there natural rights. it also stops the slave trade in 20 years. the articles of confederation makes a 2 house legislature one with representation by population and one with equal representation.also it makes the 3/5 compromise which states that 3 out of every 5 slaves will be counted in population

  30. The Articles of Confedertion did not last as the United States' government because it allowed a rebellion of 1000 farmers nearly overthrow Massachusets. It also did not give the United States a strong economy However it did do good at one thing, the Northwest Ordanance. To make the country stronger the entire government must be changed. If the United States kept this government the states might have been at war with one another collapsing the country as a whole. The new constitution gave more power to the federal government and wa amendable(changable). The Constitution later included a Bill of Rights also.

  31. The Articles of Confederation didn't last because the states had too much power and could easily be defeted. Thankfuly the Articles of Confederation did some thing worth while. It made land for schools. To make the govermant stronger the federal government needed more power so it can hold the states together. It also needed to be able to train and have an army and navy ready at any moment. If we ended up keeping the Articles of Confederation the states sooner then later would have crumpled to the ground. The states would end up vunerable to attacts. The founding fathers when creating the constitution made sure that the federal government received more power (enough power to send armies when/where needed), population, how the government would run( 3 branches of government/legislative, executive, and judicial ), and slavery(which did not change much. only the fact that the slave trade should end in 20 years.) It is a good thing the founding fathers created a goverment when they did.

  35. The articles of the confederation did not last as long as the United States government because it was weak. there was only some goods it had like it made some land for schools, also for the NW territory government. it had basic rights, no slavery, and provides a way for territory to become state. Lots of things needed to be changed to the articles of confederation to make the country stronger! Like getting an army, changing how they trade so they can actually trade!!! Just think about if they didn't make a new government and kept the articles of confederation the country would fall and it would be out of control!!! But the founding fathers did gather around to make a new government and change there voting, kept slavery, changed their government to make it a much more reliable government.

  36. The articles of confederation didn't last that long for many of reasons. The biggest reason why it didn't last that long was because it was to weak. Another reason was that at least 9 out of13 states had to agree on a law be fore it was passed. And no one could tax. Over all the articles of confederation did nothing good for us and was very weak and did not last as long as other governments did, and the articles of confederation soon fell and was taken away ( nonexistent anymore).

Thhe federal goverment should have had more power over states and Shays rebellion showed that. something that needed to be changed was how 9 states had to agree to make a law, stats were not the same and lived differnt lives, it would be impossible for them to see eye to eye. if the United States kep the articles of confereration it would have fallen to the ground over time.
