The Patriots fought long and hard to gain their independence from the British. Next they needed to decide how to run the newly freed colonies. Patriot leaders like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington had many ideas about what the new government should look like, but they didn't always agree with each other. They had many long, and heated arguments debating many issues: Who would run the government? How much power would the government have? Who would choose the leaders? What kind of laws should the country have?
If you were one of the founding fathers (sorry ladies, you didn't have much of a say) of our country, how would you set up the government?Keep in mind, many people just fought a war to gain freedom from the British rule, so you don't want a government that they are not going to agree with.
Be specific in you answer. Consider things like taxes, trade, religion, laws, how to deal with other countries, military... Also remember that you still have those "pesky" Native Americans to deal with west of the Appalachian Mountains and those annoying British to the north in Canada.

DeleteIf i were a founding father deciding how to make the goverment, i would have to consider a lot of things. One thing is certain, the govermant would not be similsr to the British goverment. The Brith goverment and how they made their laws is what got us to this difficult decision. No one should have too much power and people should have a say in the laws. There should be one person who has the final say. That person should have experiance and knowlage. That person should be able to guide us through hard times and lead us well. They should be able to make the colonies strong and organized. the goverment should have a FAIR balence. That is how i would have made the goverment.
ReplyDeleteI would set up a government by having the people of the colonies voting on them.I would have taxes payed at the end of 3 months in a decent sized amount of money, so that the colonists would have time to get the money they are taxed.I would limit the amount of trade throughout the colony(S)to be more safe about who is coming and leaving the country.There would be a "Trading Season". I would let the colonists believe in whatever they wanted to believe in. I would have the colonist vote on laws. The only laws I would have would limit the colonists leaving the colonies with out anyone knowing and limit the age of to when a child is allowed to use machinery like plows and other farming equipment. When there comes a time to deal with other countries I would send a navy over to that country and give them a war threat notice when the navy got there stating if there was any more conflict there would be a war. I would have at least 1 man from each family be in the army. There would be town armys, an army for each town. If the Native Americans wanted something like land or extra and tools I would respect them and give them what they need. I would just respect them in genral. I would also have the Native Americans in trade for anything they needed help me deal with the British if needed.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I think the colonists would really like the way the colonies were governed and taken care of. I also think it is realy smart to keep France and Spain in "contact" because if a war breaks out of no-where it would be nice to have reinforcements. Giving women rights is also really smart because they won't be angry for one thing and they might be able to help out a lot throughout the colonies. They could vote, which would add compition to the election. THey could also help deliver messages to colony to colony. Keeping George Washington is also a great idea because he knows how to command an army something you need or might need.

DeleteIf I was founding father I would ban all taxes. I would let any religion to come into the country. The army would be high skilled fighters keeping the British from coming into our country. Also we would be nice to the Native Americans to try to avoid another war. I would also let any trading company (besides the British companies) trade with us. Finally the laws would be very fair.

Deleteif i was a founding father i would set up a fair government. i would make the taxes minimal. i would trade with frace and spain (because we just were in a war with britan). i would let people practice whatever religion they wanted. some laws i would have are: no stealing, fair trials,...ect. i would have a strong millitary so we could defeat any countries that try to bother us. as for the indians, i would try to make peace with them because we dont need another enemy and they can be very useful. i would ignore the british because i dont want another war to start.

The taxes would beon thingsbthe colonists would rarely need, such as the items taxed in the stamp act(with representation of course!). The laws would be simple and easy to follow but not allowing them to go on a free for all stealing and killing. the trading would be easy i would trade with countries such as spain and france because of there past help in tight situations. The voting would be as it is currently but women and slaves would also be allowed. speaking of women and slaves there would be rights for everyone as stated in the declaration of independence). i feel my rule would make the people happy, along with making the gavernment some money.

I would let the colonists pick who should run the government and " pick" the laws but the government would have a say in it to. The residents would choose the leaders. The person with the most votes would become the " president". I would also have the government run like a representative government. The residents would Have as little tax as possible and if they had a problem with the taxes I would be flexible. They could have any religion. The Native Americans and the British would be captured if causing any problems and executed immediately. The military would have very good shooters so they could defend us if there were any problems. The colonists would have a lot of say in the government.

I would not force people into the military i would ask them if they wanted to be in and if they were i would provide his famialy with goods for a lower price. ReplyDeleteI have many considerations for running the governemt of the colonies. Even though i am a girl all men should have equal rights including black men, women should also have rights but obviously that didint happen. I would also have evrey citizen of the colonies vote for a leader allowing their honest opinion with no violence included. I dont think the president should have a fancy home becasue he is leader but his usual home. I also think that it would be best for people who fought in the army to have a say who will run their government since they just fought in the war. One law that would be great is men are to support the women in finacial aid by working and the women be free to travel and take care of the house and kids. I also think there should be no arranged marrages since you may not like the person. Evreyone should have freedom and no one should be excluded since we did just fight for our freedom and then make it unfare for the colored. Music should also be required during town meetings. Music should be required to make a pleasant atmposhpere.

There would still be taxes but at a cost depending on how cheap or expensive the item is. For example if the item was cheap it would be marked up a little more with taxes than if the item was expensive. I would only allow trade with countries and communities that the Continental Congress would agree sold safe products. Freedom of religion be a definite yes because discrimination would be banished. The laws would be made to control any problems or discrimination America might have had, and for the safety of the country. Other countries would not be allowed to even watch America let alone start a war with it, the people would be protected. The military would be trained to the fullest 24/7 and they would still be trained after they have completely turned professional. The Native Americans would either become allies or agree to not make any threats to America. Also the Appalachian Mountains would be closed off if any threats were made by Native Mountains. The military would always watch for any activity going on with the British in Canada and no more wars would be created by them, to us. America's government would only be made up so the people be safe and every one would be happy with it.

There would be governments in all states, and they would be called state governments. Because, the people who have experienced how it would be like to be under the British’s control, didn’t like how they controlled their country. In Britain, they had one central government and a king. But here in America, we will have a government in each of the states, and the leader won’t be a king, he will be a president. The president shall not be a tyrant! He will take an oath to our loyal country. If he turns out to be a tyrant, he will be killed by having his head cut off! And we will have a very well trained army that will be trained every week of the month. British will never control us ever again. We have our dignity and pride and will use it respect.
